Our last day in DC was Columbus Day. We had a short tour at the Capital building. Where the Senate and House meet were closed but we did get to see the Library of Congress which was so beautiful! As a consolation prize they let us go down on the bottom level where the desk and that secret passage supposedly are in the movie "National Treasure" with Nicholas Cage. They told us the bottom level is only open to the public on Presidents day and Columbus day. After going to Arlington National Cemetery we met up with our friends the Jenkins who moved out to Virgina 4 or 5 yrs. ago. We went out to dinner and it was as if no time had passed since we last saw them we had a great time with them and I loved every minute I got to spend in Washington DC!
The Capitol building
The painting up in the Rotunda or big dome of the Capitol.
Each state had a monument with a representative from their state that was influential. For example Utah had Brigham Young, Nevada had an Indian woman named Winnemucca and Iowa had Samuel Kirkwood.
The only picture we got of the Library of Congress before our camera died.

There were graves as far as I could see. Going to Arlington National cemetery really made me even more grateful for all the brave men and women who have fought for our country.

This is the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. We got there just in time to see the changing of the guards.
I really wanted to go see the Challenger space shuttle graves. I remember being in first grade when we were told in school about the space shuttle that had a teacher on board and all I could think about is how sad I would be if my 1st grade teacher Mrs. Midgley had decided to go up to outer space and never came home.
The famous U.S. Marines Memorial
This is a quote near JFK's grave. I wish my Mom had been there with us she always talked about JFK as President and the day he was killed when we were little.

It is all so impressive and beautiful. I am so glad that you got to go and see all of that. Love the Library of Congress and Arlington is so awesome, sacred ground for sure, it really does make you feel deep gratitude for those men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. I can't help, but to think about their families and all that they had to give up too.
The library of congress is cool. Glad you got a special tour on Columbus Day.
